Judgement: The Art of Complex Decision Making

Unravelling the essential elements of great decision-making is not easy. One issue is that there seem to be as many articles which suggest that it is good to "trust our gut," in other words to rely on instinct or intuition, as there are saying strong rationalisation and robust decision processes are the answer. Click here if you would like to read about this challenge in more detail.

This workshop delivers the solution for how to be able to improve decisions in all circumstances by uncovering the errors of thinking that lead to errors in judgement. The answer is offers resolves the differences between the two alternative approaches by demonstrating that both camps are right, but not equally so in all circumstances. The context is critical. Without awareness of the impact of context – in this case specifically the relative levels of order and complexity that exist – no one can possibly make good decisions all of the time. It is the context that determines which approach will achieve the optimal result.

The second major barrier to consistent, good judgement is the complexity of the mental processes involved. Despite the fact that these processes have been studied for several decades, few people are aware of how their inherent biases and traps can affect decisions. These traps cannot be fully overcome because they are hardwired into our subconscious minds; however, there are many highly effective protective measures that can be taken once they are understood. Awareness allows tests and disciplines to be built into decision-making processes to uncover errors in thinking before they become errors in judgement. Forewarned is forearmed.

To address both of these challenges, this workshop:

  • Heightens awareness of what judgement actually is and of its importance
  • Demonstrates the importance of context in determining how issues of judgement should be approached and describe a model to allow easy application of this concept
  • Enables participants to understand the cognitive processes that underlie judgement
  • Examines and raises awareness of the barriers to good judgement
  • Provides practical experience of applying principles learnt.

The objective is that everyone will leave with simple and easily applicable tools and techniques for achieving both immediate and long-term improvements in their judgement capabilities and confidence. The rewards to be gained from doing so are considerable, because judgement determines how well every other talent or capability we have can be applied.
