Achieving Optimal Performance
Most people fully recognise that developing a positive psychology is critical to high achievement in sport. There are many examples of people with huge talent who have failed to convert their ability into success because of a weakness in this area: under pressure their performance suffered. Yet, even with the recent upsurge in interest in Emotional Intelligence, relatively few give much consideration to the impact that their emotional state has on their performance in the work environment. Fewer still take the time to proactively improve these skills.
Back to sport for a moment, top class athletes must deal with the fact that it is not possible to ask for a delay to the start of their event because they are not ready and do so by learning to perform on demand. They know that their optimal performance state is an emotional response, and they condition themselves to be able to produce it at will and maintain it even under the most challenging or stressful of situations. As Steve Davis said, “The true champion is the person who can play as if it means nothing when it means everything.” This capability separates the good from the genuinely great.
The Optimal Performance State is the same for other high stress areas as it is in sport because the underlying emotional elements are the same – things like alert focus, concentration, confidence, optimism, enjoyment and relaxation. No one ever performs at their best when uptight, stressed out, or in a negative frame of mind. At work, performance on demand is also often a prerequisite for success, especially for leaders, and it may be even more important than in sport because the stressors often last much longer.
This presentation addresses what it takes to create the optimal performance state in yourself and others. Things participants will learn include:
- Why emotions have such a profound impact on individual performance.
- Why the mood of its leaders so deeply affect the overall performance of a business.
- How to produce an appropriate and adaptive response to things happening in your external environment.
- The importance of happiness to high job satisfaction and low levels of sickness.
- Why stress is actually good for you, why the common recommendations in relation to it are wrong and how to handle stressors effectively.
- How to manage your emotions to enhance your leadership capabilities.
