Engaging for Success
Most people these days have heard of 'employee engagement' but its vital role in creating a successful business is yet to be fully recognised. Engagement has been shown to be the foremost driver of workplace culture – and culture is known to be the leading predictor of future profitability and growth across all industries.
This conclusion was confirmed in 2009 by the MacLeod Report to Government, which reported extensive evidence that organisations that truly engage and inspire their employees produce world class levels of innovation, productivity and performance. For example, according to solid industry research:
- Employee engagement scores regularly account for 45 to 50 percent of the variance in customer service scores.
- Three in four engaged employees think they can positively affect customer service. Only one in four disengaged employees agree.
- Engaged employees are five times less likely to have safety-related incidents than disengaged ones. And when they do, the cost is six times higher on average per incident for the disengaged employee.
- Disengaged employees are over 85 percent more likely to leave, leading to increased search, hiring, and training costs.
So what is engagement? It refers to employees being committed to their organisation’s goals and values, motivated to contribute to organisational success, and able at the same time to enhance their own sense of well-being. In world-class organizations, the ratio of engaged to actively disengaged employees is near 8:1 – and it shows in their results. However, there is a problem…
The shocking part of the employee engagement challenge is that research indicates that overall only between 17% and 29% (depending on the research source) of employees are actively engaged in their job at any one time. It’s as though a soccer team were to have only 2-3 players 100% committed to the team’s success – the chances of it winning are slim! Unfortunately, the effect is the same in business. Companies that do not fully engage their staff almost always struggle.
The challenge is that engagement cannot be achieved by the mechanistic approach typical of most companies. Employees very quickly see through attempts to purchase, command or coerce their commitment, leading to cynicism and disillusionment. The answer is leadership…
The "Best Companies to Work For" research shows a consistently high correlation between employee engagement and leadership. This presentation will look at how leadership can create an environment in which engaged employees freely and willingly give their discretionary effort, thereby becoming much more productive and profitable.
In this session participants will:
- Learn how to make employees more productive, more profitable, more customer-focused, safer, and more likely to withstand temptations to leave
- Understand the foundations necessary to create a step-change in workplace performance.
